1. VISIT THE BAROQUE BENRATH PALACE

Anyone starting their city break to Düsseldorf on Königsallee is certain to be impressed by the baroque Benrath Palace in the south of the city. You can visit the palace’s living quarters, with their magnificent rooms, as part of a palace tour, or listen to historical music from the 17th to 18th centuries during a concert.

Afterwards, take a stroll through the splendid Palace Park, past lime trees, the Palace Pond and the lush gardens. Round off your stay at the Palace Café with a slice of cake and a cappuccino.

2. JOIN THE CAPTAIN FOR A TRIP ON THE RHINE

You can’t escape the Rhine on a city break in Düsseldorf. It is even nicer to take a trip on a ship and let the backdrop of Düsseldorf glide past.

The Weisse Flotte offers a panoramic ship tour on the Rhine, for example. The tour begins from the Rheinuferpromenade/Pegeluhr mooring right by the old town. From the sun deck, you can marvel at the famous Düsseldorf Medienhafen and enjoy a refreshing beverage.

Another possibility for ship tours along the Rhine is the KD in Düsseldorf. Here, you soak in the panoramic city views during a three-hour all-inclusive evening cruise. As well as a feast for the eyes, you will also be served a three-course menu with your choice of drinks. The tour begins at Burgplatz at the heart of the old town.

3. SHOPPING ALONG THE LUXURIOUS KÖNIGSALLEE IN DÜSSELDORF

No city break to Düsseldorf would be complete without a trip to the best-known luxury shopping street – Königsallee. The promenade boasts luxury boutiques by fashion designers, watchmakers, jewellers and perfumeries. Stroll along the Kö-Graben past countless chestnut trees and marvel at brands such as Chanel, Dior, Gucci and Prada.

From Hotel Kö59, you can reach the luxury shops quickly and stow away your purchases immediately at reception or in your hotel room, before enjoying more of Düsseldorf’s highlights.

4. DISCOVER DÜSSELDORF’S INSPIRATIONAL ART MUSEUMS

The hearts of art lovers will skip a beat if they get the chance to enjoy new exhibitions during their stay. You can find several modern art museums that are very much worth a visit west of the Hofgarten in Düsseldorf’s old town.

The Kunsthalle and Kunstverein alternate exhibitions throughout the year, covering a wide range of themes intended to provoke reflection. The K20 Kunstsammlung is right opposite. Here you can find important works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and a comprehensive collection by Paul Klee.

5. TAKE A STROLL AROUND THE MAGNIFICENT HOFGARTEN

Hofgarten is located to the north of Königsallee and is the first and oldest public garden in Germany, dating from 1769. The park grounds span 28 hectares and mark the transition from a strictly baroque garden style to natural English landscape gardens.

After an extensive shopping trip along the Kö or a museum tour as part of your city break, the Hofgarten offers the chance to relax completely.

6. VISIT THE THEATRE AND OPERA DURING YOUR CITY BREAK

No city break would be complete without culture and music. For this reason, you should discover the best-known theatres and opera houses and enjoy the evening programme.

The Deutsche Oper am Rhein is among the largest opera houses in Germany. It was founded in 1956. With its distinguished ensemble of soloists, choir and internationally celebrated Ballett am Rhein company, it enjoys a great deal of popularity in the Düsseldorf region and across Europe. Discover the current programme of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein here.

The Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus also enjoys a good reputation in the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. Whether a classical performance or a premiere, youth or community theatre – you can round off your city break to Düsseldorf at this tradition-steeped theatre. Discover the current programme of the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus here.

7. VISIT DÜSSELDORF’S ART HOUSE CINEMAS

Find sophisticated entertainment at Düsseldorf’s numerous small art house cinemas. You won’t find any blockbusters showing here, but rather artistically ambitious films that fall outside of the mainstream.

One art house cinema packed with history is Cinema, founded in 1957. It is located in Schneider-Wibbel-Gasse in the old town and has won numerous awards for its outstanding programme. There are regular first screenings and premieres here.

8. DISCOVER JAPANESE CULTURE AT DÜSSELDORF’S EKO-HAUS

Cherry blossom in April and tea ceremonies throughout the year – the centre for Japanese culture is a highlight of any city break to Düsseldorf. The EKO-Haus captivates with its beautifully tended gardens and the authentic Japanese house with temple.

Visitors can enjoy lectures and various courses, such as calligraphy and Japanese-language lessons, and visit Buddhist events. Advance reservation is required to visit the Japanese wooden house and its current exhibitions.

9. SAMPLE CULINARY HIGHLIGHTS IN DÜSSELDORF

At gourmet restaurant Kö59 by Björn Freitag, you will eat like a king. Here, culinary expert Björn Freitag serves regional specialities with international influences. You can also sample exquisite wines at the wine bar for hours of indulgence on Königsallee.

Düsseldorf is a centre of the wine trade – it is therefore well worth a visit to the historic Weinhaus Tante Anna at the heart of the old town. This traditional family business, now in its seventh generation, serves regional dishes and excellent wines. Dine in the ambience of a former 16th-century chapel as you enjoy a (jazz) dinner or wine tasting.

A detour to Brasserie Stadthaus on Mühlenstrasse is well worth it for fans of French cuisine. Dine under Düsseldorf’s most beautiful coffered ceiling, in a private alcove or under the open sky in the inner courtyard of the almost 400-year-old town house in the old town.

We have also put together some suggestions for other activities in Düsseldorf.
